Overview

Parts Work Practitioner Training is a trauma-informed online course designed for coaches, therapists, hypnotherapists, counsellors, holistic practitioners, support workers and helping professionals who want to deepen their understanding of inner conflict, emotional protection and the different parts of the self.

Many clients come to sessions feeling stuck, overwhelmed, reactive, avoidant, self-critical, disconnected or caught in repeating patterns they do not fully understand. They may describe inner conflict by saying things such as, “part of me wants to move forward, but another part feels scared,” or “I know what I should do, but something keeps stopping me.” Parts work provides a compassionate framework for understanding these inner experiences without shame, judgement or force.

Rather than viewing anxiety, people-pleasing, perfectionism, procrastination, anger, avoidance, numbness or self-sabotage as problems to simply remove, this approach explores the protective purpose behind these patterns. It helps practitioners ask what a part may be trying to do, what it is afraid of, what it may be protecting, and what the client’s internal system may need in order to feel safer, more understood and more integrated.

Throughout this course, learners are introduced to key parts work concepts, including managers, firefighters, exiles, burdens, blending, unblending, Self-energy, permission, pacing, internal communication, safety and integration. The course also explores how protective parts develop, how vulnerable parts may carry emotional pain, and how practitioners can begin to work with the client’s internal system in a respectful and trauma-informed way.

A strong emphasis is placed on safety, consent and professional scope. This course does not encourage practitioners to force clients into trauma processing or push too quickly into vulnerable material. Instead, it teaches learners to slow down, recognise protective strategies, build trust with parts, ask permission, monitor regulation and understand when a client may need stabilisation, referral or specialist therapeutic support.

The training includes structured lessons, case studies, reflective exercises, practical templates, visual guides and downloadable resources to help learners apply parts work responsibly in practice. These tools are designed to support practitioner confidence, encourage reflective learning and help students understand how parts work can be integrated safely alongside existing helping, coaching or therapeutic skills.

By the end of the course, learners will have a strong foundational understanding of parts work and how it can be used to support deeper client insight, self-awareness, emotional understanding and internal cooperation. This training is ideal for practitioners who want to move beyond surface-level behaviour change and develop a more compassionate, trauma-informed approach to working with client patterns, resistance and inner conflict.

Description

Parts Work Practitioner Training is a trauma-informed online course designed to help practitioners understand inner conflict, emotional protection, self-sabotage, resistance, vulnerable parts and the different aspects of the self.

Parts work is a powerful approach for helping clients understand why they may feel stuck, conflicted, overwhelmed, avoidant, self-critical, reactive or disconnected. Many clients naturally speak in parts language, such as “part of me wants to change, but another part feels scared,” “I feel like I am fighting with myself,” or “something keeps holding me back.”

This course helps practitioners understand these inner conflicts through a compassionate, trauma-informed lens.

Instead of viewing patterns such as people-pleasing, perfectionism, avoidance, anger, numbness, procrastination, anxiety or self-criticism as problems to eliminate, parts work explores the protective purpose underneath. It helps practitioners look beneath behaviour and ask:

  • What is this part trying to protect?
  • What is this part afraid of?
  • What is this part carrying?
  • What does this part need?
  • What would help the client’s internal system feel safer?

What you will learn

By completing this course, learners will explore:

  • What parts work is and how it can support client understanding
  • Why people have different parts with different roles, needs and fears
  • The difference between protective parts and vulnerable parts

  • How to support integration and behaviour change
  • When to pause, slow down, refer on or stay within professional scope

Course content includes

Introduction

This section introduces the course, what to expect, and the foundations of parts work. Learners begin exploring the idea that everyone has parts and that different parts can hold different roles, emotions, beliefs, needs and protective strategies.

Ethics, Scope, and Safety

This section explores the practitioner’s role, professional ethics, scope of practice and the difference between coaching and therapy. It also covers safety, risk, emotional regulation, contraindications, grounding, referral awareness and when parts work should pause.

Understanding the Internal System of Parts

This section explores the internal system of parts, including managers, firefighters, exiles and common parts that may show up in everyday life and client work. Learners begin to understand how protective and vulnerable parts influence behaviour, emotion and internal conflict.

Self-Energy, Blending & Practitioner Presence

This section introduces Self-energy, blending, unblending and practitioner presence. Learners explore how to support clients in creating more space from activated parts, while also understanding the importance of practitioner regulation, empathy, compassion and grounded presence.

Identifying and Mapping Parts

This section focuses on recognising parts and mapping the client’s internal system. Learners explore how to identify parts, understand internal conflict, use parts mapping activities and apply these skills through practice and role play.

Building Relationships with Parts

This section explores how to build trust with parts, work with resistance as protection, use trauma-informed language, understand safety and shame, ask permission, support internal cooperation and communicate with parts safely.

How Healing Happens in Parts Work

This section looks at how healing and change can happen through parts work. Learners explore how protective parts can shift from survival roles to trusted roles, how exiles and burdens relate to emotional healing, and how integration supports internal transformation.

Parts Work Process - Understanding the Framework

This section introduces a structured flow for parts work sessions. Learners explore key steps including regulating and accessing Self-energy, identifying the part, separating and unblending, getting curious, building trust, exploring what the part needs, and supporting integration, unburdening readiness and safe closure.

The Unburdening Process and Emotional Release

This section introduces unburdening as a careful, permission-based process. Learners explore what unburdening means, how to approach it safely, how to witness without re-experiencing, and how to support emotional release without forcing it.

Integration and Behaviour Change

This section explores how awareness can begin to translate into behaviour change. Learners look at habit alignment, small behavioural shifts, between-session practice, integration, setbacks and how to support lasting internal change.

Why this course is valuable

Clients rarely present with one simple issue. They may want change but fear it. They may want connection but protect themselves through distance. They may want confidence but feel controlled by an inner critic. They may want success but procrastinate, avoid or self-sabotage.

Parts work helps practitioners understand these contradictions with more compassion and clarity. It teaches learners to look beneath behaviour and consider what the part may be protecting, fearing, carrying or needing.

This can help practitioners:

  • Understand resistance as protection
  • Work with self-sabotage more compassionately
  • Recognise protective patterns in client behaviour
  • Support clients with internal conflict
  • Reduce shame and increase self-awareness
  • Help clients build a kinder relationship with themselves
  • Work more safely with emotional complexity
  • Notice when a client is blended with a part
  • Use Self-energy as a foundation for compassionate inner communication
  • Avoid pushing clients beyond what their system is ready for

This course does not replace a practitioner’s existing modality. It strengthens it by offering a deeper way to understand the client’s internal system.

Parts Work Practitioner Training is IPHM accredited and is suitable for learners who want a structured, trauma-informed introduction to parts work, Self-energy, unblending, parts mapping, ethical practice and compassionate client support.
