This Paediatric First Aid course teaches you a range of potentially life-saving skills. This Paediatric First Aid course is suitable for anyone who is around children, either in your family or the workplace, such as schools and nurseries, after-school and sports clubs, childminders, play and activity centres, and holiday parks.

Aims of a Paediatric first aider

The aims of any first aider are known as the 3 Ps:

1. Preserve Life

2. Prevent the situation worsening

3. Promote Recovery

First aid and the law

First Aid is defined as ‘help given to a sick or injured person until full medical treatment is available’. Not all businesses will have a dedicated first aider. However, under the First Aid Regulations 1981, the legal minimum first-aid provisions in any workplace are:

• a suitably stocked first-aid kit
• an appointed person to take charge of first-aid arrangements
• information for employees about first-aid arrangements

The responsibilities of the person appointed to take charge of first-aid arrangements include paediatric first aid if the business involves children.

This online Paediatric First Aid course follows the recommended UK syllabus for those working with children and who may on occasion be required to administer first aid.

Paediatric First Aid Learning Objectives

The responsibilities of the first aider include:

Assessing the situation

• What happened?
• Count the number of casualties (you may need to prioritise treatment)
• Look for history, signs and symptoms of casualty

Protecting from dangers

• Assess for further dangers
• Protect yourself first, then protect others

Getting help

• Evaluate what help is needed
• Ask bystanders for assistance
• Call for help on 999 or 112

Minimising infection risks

• Wash your hands before and after giving help
• Apply PPE, such as gloves, face shield, apron
• Cover any cuts with a plaster
• Dispose of any contaminated waste carefully
• Use sterile, undamaged, in-date dressings

Reporting and recording

• Accurately record incidents
• Report accidents when necessary
• Maintain confidentiality
