Detailed Curriculum

Module 01: Introduction to Paediatric First Aid

Module one introduces the basic principles of Paediatric First Aid when applied specifically to children and infants. It also looks at the key responsibilities for a First Aider, and how these apply to public places and community properties. The extreme importance of preventing cross-infection and operating within the bounds of public safety is covered as well.

Module 02: Assessment and Assistance

In Paediatric First Aid Module two, we explore the best ways to take control of an incident where a child has been hurt and expand the importance of being able to assess the severity in moments. This opens up to details of how to effectively communicate with a young casualty and get the information you need under the worst of circumstances. The importance of scene cleaning and post-accident hygiene is also covered.

Module 03: Equipment and Techniques

Module Three explores the essential tools and techniques used in paediatric first aid. This includes how to properly use first aid equipment such as bandages, splints, and resuscitation devices. Learners also develop skills in applying age-appropriate methods for treating injuries and providing immediate assistance.

Module 04: Loss of Responsiveness and CPR

In Paediatric First Aid Module Three, we look at the way CPR can be applied to two sets of distinctive age groups, that of children and infants. The module shows how to check for responsiveness and breathing difficulties in patients, and exactly what methods should be applied in each situation. We also examine the uses of an AED and what role it can play in the resuscitation of a child.

Module 05: Common Illnesses, Injuries, and Incidents

In Paediatric First Aid Module Four, we run through the symptoms, causes and treatments of the most common ailments that can affect a child. This includes all-too-frequent occurrences like stings and burns, along with life-affecting conditions such as Diabetes and Anaphylaxis. The Paediatric First Aid module also looks at rarer incidents such as Frostbite and Heatstroke, and exactly what you should do to relieve the child’s condition.

Module 06: Acute Medical Conditions

Paediatric First Aid Module Five examines the more complex medical conditions that can seriously affect the well-being of a child. You’ll learn the cause and effect of serious illnesses such as Sickle-Cell Anaemia and Meningitis, as well as understand exactly what to do if a child suffers from symptoms. We also explain the existence of Febrile Convulsions, along with more recognisable conditions such as Asthma and food poisoning.

Module 07: Call for an Emergency

Paediatric First Aid Module Six goes into detail regarding the criteria for calling Emergency Services, and the different types of services that exist in the UK via 999 and 112. It also supplies recommendations of the actions that a Paediatric First Aider can do when waiting for an ambulance.

Module 08: Environmental Injuries

Module Eight examines injuries caused by environmental factors such as burns, scalds, frostbite, heatstroke, and electrical shocks. The module guides on assessing severity, administering first aid, and preventing further harm while ensuring the child’s safety.

Module 09: Caring for Children

Module Nine highlights the holistic approach to caring for children in first aid situations. It addresses comfort, reassurance, and communication techniques that help reduce fear and anxiety. Learners also learn how to maintain a safe and supportive environment during treatment.

Module 10: Psychological First Aid for Children

Module Ten covers the emotional and psychological impact of accidents or illness on children. It teaches strategies for calming, comforting, and supporting children in distress, helping them cope with trauma, and knowing when to seek additional psychological support.

Module 11: Things to Keep in Mind

Module Eleven provides practical reminders and safety tips that every paediatric First Aider should remember. This includes maintaining hygiene, ensuring personal safety, documenting incidents, and understanding limitations when providing care.

Module 12: Paediatric First Aid for Common Injuries and Incidents

Module Twelve consolidates knowledge of frequent injuries such as cuts, bruises, fractures, choking, and nosebleeds. Learners are guided step-by-step on how to provide effective first aid and manage incidents to minimise harm and promote recovery.
