Course Content
This course assesses the following units:
Unit 1: Anatomy and flight – Here we will dig deeper into the feather than you will likely have done before, and we consider why the ability to fly is not something shared by all bird species. We’ll see why some birds have lost this ability throughout evolution.
Unit 2: Migrations – In this unit, we explore the remarkable story of migration, looking at how and why a tiny bird like the Arctic tern (Sterna paradisaea) travels an astonishing 22,000 miles a year and how they navigate their way from the very north of the planet to the south and back.
Unit 3: Courtship – In this unit, we will explore not just the elaborate colours and ornate plumage that some bird species use but also how different species adopt different strategies and displays to signal themselves out as eligible mates.
Unit 4: Nesting – In this unit, we look at how birds are adapted in their own way to allow sperm to pass from male to female. We’ll also consider how birds protect their growing and developing chicks outside the body in hard calcareous shells and the nests they use to keep them safe.
Unit 5: Feeding relationships – In zoology, the study of life on Earth and the animals we share our planet with, scientists can categorise and compare animals based on how they access energy and nutrition – the strategies they use to find food and the types of food they look for.
Unit 6: Conservation – In the final unit of this ornithology diploma, we look at the importance of bird populations. We consider the various factors that affect the number of birds in a population and determine the species’ health as a whole.
This course can be taken over a 12 month period but you can complete it as fast or as slowly as you wish.
