Description
A crucial part of the course is the identification of electrical risks, including electric shock, arc flash, arc blast, and fire. Trainees are taught about the different voltage levels encountered offshore, safe approach distances, and the significance of earthing and bonding. They also learn how environmental conditions at sea—such as humidity, saltwater exposure, and confined metallic spaces—can increase electrical danger. This knowledge builds confidence in identifying warning signage, lockout points, and live zones so that hazards can be avoided before work begins.
The training covers the procedures required to prevent unintentional energization, focusing on lockout–tagout (LOTO) systems and permit-to-work controls, which are essential during maintenance and troubleshooting activities. Workers are guided through the correct sequencing of isolation, testing for dead, grounding, and re-energization. They are reminded that safe work depends not only on technical steps but also clear communication between turbine technicians, control rooms, and offshore substation teams.
Personal protective equipment (PPE) and emergency response form another major element of the course. Participants learn what protection is required for various electrical tasks, including insulating gloves, arc-rated clothing, and face protection. They are also trained in how to react if an electrical incident occurs—raising alarms, securing the area, and providing safe assistance without endangering themselves. Regular inspections, housekeeping, and reporting of equipment defects are stressed to prevent small issues from escalating into serious electrical failures.
By the end of the training, personnel understand that offshore wind is powered by complex high-voltage systems that require respect, awareness, and strict procedural discipline. The course promotes a proactive safety culture, where every worker is alert to electrical hazards and contributes to preventing incidents. This ensures that clean energy is delivered reliably while protecting the health and safety of those who make offshore wind possible.
