The NEBOSH International Technical Certificate in Oil and Gas Operational Safety is an internationally recognised qualification that will provide you with a broad understanding of key health and safety issues specific to the oil and gas and petrochemicals industries. It enables people to effectively carry out workplace safety responsibilities both onshore and offshore based on international standards and management systems.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you will have an understanding of:
- The purpose of and procedures for investigating incidents and how the lessons learnt can be used to improve health and safety in the oil and gas industries.
- The hazards inherent in oil and gas arising from the extraction, storage and processing of raw materials and products.
- Risk management techniques used in the oil and gas industries.
- The purpose and content of an organisation’s documented evidence to provide a convincing and valid argument that a system is adequately safe in the oil and gas industries.
- The principles of assessing and managing contractors, including the roles of parties involved.
- The tools, standards, measurements, competency requirements and controls applicable to Process Safety Management (PSM) in the oil and gas industries.
- The importance of safe plant operation and maintenance of hydrocarbon containing equipment and processes
- The hazards, risks and controls relating to hydrocarbon, including equipment and processes, containment and fire hazards
- The principles, procedures and resources for effective emergency response.

Description
The syllabus takes a risk management approach based on best practice and international industry standards. It consists of 1 Unit: Management of International Oil and Gas Health and Safety and covers;
- Element 1: Health, safety and environmental management in context
- Element 2: Hydrocarbon process safety 1
- Element 3: Hydrocarbon process safety 2
- Element 4: Fire protection and emergency response
- Element 5: Logistics and transport operations
Examination
There is one 2-hour exam for IOG1 which consists of 10 'short-answer' questions and 1 'long answer' question.

Who is this course for?
This well respected and internationally recognised qualification is aimed at those who have the responsibility for ensuring safety as part of their day to day duties in the Oil and Gas or Petrochemicals industries, including Managers, Employee representatives and newly appointed Health and Safety Advisers.
Requirements
Delegates should already have an underpinning knowledge of safety issues and, although not compulsory, and it recommended they have already have studied one of NEBOSH’s Certificate-level qualifications.
