Overview

When providing support to vulnerable adults and those with mobility issues, you will need to be able to move and position them safely.

This course explains how to keep everyone safe whilst moving and handling individuals and equipment. Legislation and best practice will be covered, as well as NHS advice for minimising back pain at work. Moving and handling for personal care needs and advice on falls in older people will also be discussed.

  • You will know and understand health and safety legislation and guidance on manual handling and how the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations apply to health and social care
  • You will be able to use the correct lifting techniques and how to minimise the risks of injury at work
  • You will consider whether lifting is always the recommended course of action in a care setting, and how to react to falls

  • Back injury is the most common reason for sickness absence in health and social care. Understanding best practice in moving and handling individuals and equipment will minimise the risk of back injury at work, and ensure that you can continue to be there for the individuals you care for
  • The level of assistance individuals need in moving and achieving the correct position can vary. Some individuals will need help to get out of a chair, and some will be completely dependent on others to move them, for example, if they are unconscious or paralysed. When individuals require this degree of care, it is essential that they are moved and handled in the most sensitive and safe way. This course will help you know how best to provide this assistance.
  • Website and video resources are used to explore moving and handling in more detail, including guidance from the NHS, HSE, NICE, and the Royal College of Nursing
  • There is also suggested extra reading that gives both practical information and links to websites to expand knowledge
