Description
This Mental Health Awareness course is structured into 9 detailed lectures, each focusing on core aspects of mental health practice, assessment, and promotion, followed by a final exam.
The course begins with an introduction to mental health, covering understanding of mental health disorders, the biopsychosocial model, and addressing stigma and misconceptions. Learners gain insight into the fundamental principles underlying mental health awareness.
Psychological theories and approaches are then explored, including psychodynamic theory, cognitive behavioral theory (CBT), humanistic and existential approaches. Participants will understand the theoretical frameworks that guide mental health practice.
Common mental health disorders are examined, covering anxiety, mood, and psychotic disorders, including generalised anxiety disorder, depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Learners will develop an understanding of the symptoms, impact, and approaches to support affected individuals.
Therapeutic interventions include pharmacological treatments, psychological therapies such as CBT and DBT, and lifestyle and behavioural strategies. Participants will gain practical knowledge to support mental health care in diverse settings.
Mental health in special populations is addressed, including children, adolescents, older adults, and cultural considerations. Learners will understand how interventions must be adapted to meet the needs of different groups.
Legal and ethical issues cover UK mental health legislation, confidentiality, privacy, and ethical dilemmas in mental health practice. Participants will develop awareness of professional responsibilities and compliance.
Promoting mental health and wellbeing modules focus on prevention strategies, health promotion campaigns, and fostering self-care and resilience in individuals and communities.
Current issues and trends explore technology in mental health, workplace mental health, and global mental health challenges, equipping learners with insight into evolving practices and societal factors.
The course concludes with case studies and practical applications, allowing learners to analyse scenarios, understand the role of mental health practitioners, and develop practical skills for professional contexts.
