Overview

Mental Health Act Training - Level 2 - Online Course - CPD Accredited

Welcome to our online Mental Health Act training course for those who work in health and social care, security services and other similar settings. All our online training courses, programmes and qualifications are accredited by the CPD Certification Service (CPDUK).

In most cases, when people are treated in a hospital or another mental health facility, they have agreed or volunteered to be there. They may be referred to as a voluntary patient. However, there are cases when a person can be detained, also known as sectioned, under the Mental Health Act (1983) and treated without their agreement.

The Mental Health Act (1983) is the primary piece of legislation that covers the assessment, treatment and rights of people with a mental health disorder. The 2007 Mental Health Act made several critical changes to the 1983 Mental Health Act, which laid down provision for the compulsory detention and treatment of people with mental health problems in England and Wales. All healthcare and social care workers need to know how the Mental Health Act affects their work.

What is the Mental Health Act?

The Mental Health Act 1983 (c.20) is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom which applies to people in England and Wales. It covers the reception, care and treatment of mentally disordered persons, the management of their property and other related matters.

The 2007 Mental Health Act made several critical changes to the 1983 Mental Health Act, which laid down provision for the compulsory detention and treatment of people with mental health problems in England and Wales.

The Act stipulates the criteria for detention or ‘sectioning’, information about different sections and the rights of someone who has been detained. The Mental Health Act is the law which sets out when you can be admitted, detained and treated in hospital against your wishes. It is also known as being ‘sectioned’.

Why is this online Mental Health Act training important?

The Mental Health Act was designed to protect the rights of people with mental health problems, and to ensure that they are only admitted to hospital against their will when it is essential to ensure their well-being or safety, or for the protection of other people.

It is essential for frontline health and social care workers to be familiar with the core aspects of the Act.

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
