Online assessment

On completion of each of these mandatory training for health and social care workers, you will be required to complete an online assessment (pass mark of 80%).

What is mandatory training?

Let’s understand what both mandatory training and statutory training mean in general. Mandatory training is the training that a health/social care organisation determines is essential for safe and efficient practice and in order to reduce organisational risks and comply with local policies and regulatory guidelines.

What is statutory training?

Statutory training is the training that is usually required by law or where a statutory body has instructed an organisation to provide the training on the basis of specific legislation, for example the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.

What is the difference between mandatory and statutory training?

So what is the difference between statutory and mandatory training? Mandatory training is a compulsory requirement based upon the responsibility for medical, nursing and healthcare staff to work in a safe and effective manner. The training courses in the mandatory training courses are delivered at the appropriate depth to the level of understanding needed for each group of health and social care workers.

On the other hand, statutory training is the training that should be completed by health and social care staff to comply with the law. However, some mandatory training courses are sometimes considered to be necessary, or even compulsory to comply with the law.

Who is responsible for mandatory training?

NHS Trust and other health & social care providers have a responsibility to provide various statutory and mandatory training courses and to ensure that their staff attend. Statutory training is required to ensure that the service provider is meeting relevant legislative duties, while mandatory training is an organisational requirement to limit risk and maintain safe working practice. Statutory bodies such as the Care Quality Commission may sometimes instruct an organisation or whole sector to provide specific training to meet legislative requirements or to address the needs of service users.

Do I have to complete all the mandatory training courses above?

You will be provided with all the individual online mandatory training modules listed above. You can however choose the mandatory training courses that are most suited to your specific care environment. If you are an agency care worker, please check with your locum or care recruitment agency regarding the specific mandatory care training modules that you require to meet their compliance requirements.

What happens when you fail to meet CQC mandatory training requirements?

Health and social care providers who fail to meet the Regulation 18 requirements face regulatory action from the Care Quality Commission. Regulation 18 states that health and social care staff must receive support, training and personal development that is necessary for them to carry out their job roles and responsibilities. Health and social care providers are required to provide adequate induction training to their staff, which usually includes aspects of both statutory and mandatory training.

Who decides which mandatory training courses should be completed?

Sometimes, mandatory training can also arise from a number of sources, for example local commissioning contracts, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) or General Medical Council (GMC) among others. Most health and social care providers usually describe both statutory/mandatory training as ‘essential’ or ‘compulsory’ training which ensures staff have the knowledge to maintain a healthy and safe working environment for themselves, their colleagues and service users.

Is there guidance for mandatory training?

Professional and regulatory organisations such as the General Medical Council (GMC) and the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) provide mandatory training guidance for doctors, nurses and allied health professionals. The Royal Medical Colleges have also provided guidance on the differences between mandatory and statutory training and how their members can comply with CQC requirements. Mandatory training for healthcare professionals varies depending on specific job roles and responsibilities of each staff group.

So which is the best way to deliver statutory and mandatory training?

It is up to health/social care organisation to assess their staff training needs and ensure that they attend all the necessary training to provide safe and effective care to their patients/service users. Some mandatory training subjects, for example Resuscitation and Moving and Handling require classroom-based training to assess staff competencies to carry out practical procedures.

The majority of statutory and mandatory training courses can be delivered online using an interactive e-Learning portal. Most health and social care organisations use a combination of face-to-face and online mandatory training courses. Some health and social care organisations still use the ‘all in one mandatory training courses’. The all in one day mandatory training course covers 12 subjects, all in one day.
