Description
This qualification is designed to give you the knowledge, skills, and confidence to step up into the role of a Higher Level Teaching Assistant. By the end of the course, you’ll be equipped to take on greater responsibility in the classroom, supporting learners more effectively while also developing your professional practice.
You’ll begin by exploring the role and responsibilities of a Higher Level Teaching Assistant, gaining a clear understanding of what it means to work at this level. This includes recognising your professional duties, setting boundaries, and learning how to contribute to the wider success of your school.
A strong focus is placed on child development and welfare, covering ages 5 to 16. You’ll learn how children grow physically, socially, and intellectually, and how factors such as family life, health, and environment can influence their progress. With this knowledge, you’ll be better placed to identify needs and provide the right support at the right time.
Supporting learners with special educational needs (SEN) is another key part of the qualification. You’ll gain an understanding of legislation and frameworks around SEN, learn about common conditions, and explore how to provide tailored support for children with additional needs. This also includes strategies for working inclusively and promoting equality and diversity in the classroom.
You’ll also learn how to promote positive behaviour in children and young people, with practical strategies for managing challenges and encouraging learners to build the social and emotional skills they need to thrive. This unit prepares you to create safe, respectful, and supportive classroom environments.
Practical experience is at the heart of the course, with units focused on providing tailored support for individuals and small groups. You’ll plan and adapt resources, deliver activities, and reflect on learner progress to help children achieve their goals. This also includes developing your own skills in literacy, numeracy, and ICT to ensure you can fully support your learners.
As part of your development, you’ll focus on building positive working relationships with colleagues, parents, and carers. Communication is a vital skill for HLTAs, and you’ll learn how to share feedback, collaborate effectively, and work as part of a wider team to achieve shared objectives.
Finally, you’ll explore curriculum planning, lesson delivery, and assessment. This includes preparing and delivering lessons, managing groups and whole classes, and using assessment strategies to monitor learner progress. You’ll also consider how to use ICT effectively and develop the skills to provide constructive feedback to learners, colleagues, and parents.
Throughout your learning journey, you won’t be alone. You’ll receive dedicated support from experienced tutors, who are there to guide you through the course, answer questions, and provide feedback on your progress. Tutors will help you build confidence in both theory and practice, ensuring you feel supported as you apply your learning in the classroom.
Your learning will be assessed in a variety of ways designed to reflect real classroom practice. These include written assignments, direct observations of your practice, and the submission of evidence documents from your role. This ensures that your progress is measured not only through theory but also through the practical application of your skills in a live school environment.
