Overview
Food Handlers and their employers have a legal duty to manage Food Safety. Several EU and UK Laws set out these obligations. These Laws state that food handlers must make sure that food prepared, cooked, served or sold, is safe for human consumption.
"Food law" is a particular subset of "law." And it governs "all" food produced for human consumption. Food law sets the minimum legal requirements to ensure the food is made, labelled packaged, and presented correctly. And that it is fit for your specified purpose (for instance, if the label says the food is suitable for vegans, then this must be true). However, if a business sells food that makes its customers ill, there MAY be a case to take to Court.
Failing to follow food safety standards can cause food to become contaminated, with potentially fatal consequences.
Food handlers are responsible for the food they prepare, store, sell and serve, as it is their job to ensure that the food is safe for human consumption. A failure to follow these regulations may result in severe illness or even death. However, strict laws have been put forward to protect customers from being poisoned by poor-quality or unsafe food. Therefore, strict guidelines are imposed on both the businesses and customers of the food handler.
