Overview

Legionella bacteria can pose a serious health risk when found in water systems, particularly in commercial and public buildings. These bacteria thrive in environments such as cooling towers, hot and cold water systems, and spa pools. Inhalation of contaminated water droplets can cause Legionnaires’ disease, a potentially fatal form of pneumonia. This course is designed to give learners detailed knowledge about what Legionella is, how it spreads, and the ways in which risks can be identified and controlled. Businesses and facilities managers have a duty to keep their water systems safe, and employers are legally required to conduct risk assessments and implement preventive strategies. In this context, Legionella management is not just a compliance requirement—it’s a key aspect of maintaining public health and safety.

The course aims to equip learners with the knowledge to help organisations meet their legal obligations under health and safety law. Whether you’re managing facilities, overseeing safety procedures, or working in environmental services, this training ensures that you understand the common environments where Legionella can grow and how to prevent outbreaks. With the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) placing significant emphasis on water hygiene, this course also becomes a strong addition to the professional toolkit of those working in sectors such as hospitality, healthcare, housing, and maintenance. By completing the course, learners gain the competence to assess, report, and control risks effectively and with confidence.

Description

This course is built around five structured modules to ensure a clear and focused progression from basic concepts to risk management strategies.

  • Module 1: Learners will be introduced to the characteristics and behaviour of Legionella bacteria, including how it multiplies and spreads in water systems. The symptoms and impact of Legionnaires’ disease are also discussed to provide context for the importance of prevention.
  • Module 2: This module covers the legal duties of employers, building managers, and landlords, with reference to UK legislation such as the Health and Safety at Work Act and COSHH regulations. It outlines the need for documented risk assessments and the penalties for non-compliance.
  • Module 3: Learners explore the various locations and systems where Legionella bacteria are likely to grow, including storage tanks, pipework, air conditioning systems, and showerheads. The conditions that support bacterial growth are also explained.
  • Module 4: his module explains how to conduct a structured risk assessment of water systems. Topics include identifying potential hazards, evaluating risk levels, and maintaining assessment records. It also introduces monitoring techniques and system inspections.
  • Module 5: The final module provides guidance on how to reduce or eliminate the risk of Legionella. Learners will understand the role of temperature control, regular flushing, cleaning, and the use of biocides. Responsibilities for implementation and supervision are also outlined.

By the end of this course, learners will be ready to contribute to safe, compliant water system management in a variety of workplace settings.
