And forget everything you think you know about learning to touch type!

  • No struggling to remember the keyboard layout in your head.
  • No “lesson after lesson after lesson…” (learning just a few keys at a time)
  • No bashing away at mindless drills (again: a few keys at a time)
  • No battling with old habits and fumbling with faulty fingers

Our surprising, innovative & empowering programme trains your brain and body in a refreshingly unexpected way so that, unbelievably...

  • You can start touch typing at close to 100% accuracy
  • After just 5 online sessions of initial training.

You’ll be:

  • sitting upright; relaxed & calm;
  • without looking down at all;
  • with all your fingers on the keyboard
  • and with your mind on your what you’re typing,
    not how you’re doing it.

Description

This is true training & coaching - not just telling and trying!

It's like being trained to play tennis rather than just being told how to play.

  • We don't teach your brain the facts
(telling you how to touch type and challenging your brain to remember the instructions and pass them on to your body in a clumsy, 2nd-hand sort of way...)

  • Instead, we train your brain AND body in the behaviour it needs to adopt
(so you can actually do the skill with minimal laborious thinking & remembering)

Incredibly, you will be able to touch type nearly perfectly, surprisingly soon, because your BODY will have learnt more than your brain alone can - and far more quickly and securely.

There are several big surprises about the way this programme works.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is that:

You'll find yourself 'programmed' to be able to touch type, close to 100% accuracy, by the end of the initial tuition...

...and yet at that point you'll have spent remarkably little time actually sat at a keyboard pressing keys!

This is because, just trying to do lots of a new and unfamiliar skill on Day 1 of your training is like trying to compete in a 20-mile cycle race on the day you first learn to ride a bike: tiring, difficult, probably doomed to fail and not a real 'training programme'.

Instead of just trying to produce the 'finished skill' on a keyboard from the start, we operate on a TWO PHASE approach:

THE LEARNING PHASE (Initial training sesssions)

The focus in the initial face-to-face sessions is on training you to correctly and easily operate your body in the very best way, right from the very start, getting several 'components' of your new skill separately established...

  • controlling your eyes (so not looking down is a skill not an aspiration)

  • adopting and being able to maintain a good perfect (and relaxed) posture

  • establishing the right connections between brain & fingers (knowing which finger to use for which letter/s)

All of this can be (and surprisingly is actually best) trained away from the keyboard!

Even when you do sit at a keyboard and start pressing keys, we first spend some time purely training the physical control of your fingers on the keys (without typing letters at all at this stage).

This isolates yet another important ‘component’ of touch typing and trains it separately.

Later by the end of your online tuition sessions...

  • you have been shown how to bring together of all the separately trained components of your new skill in a controlled and careful manner, to discover how it results in very accurate touch typing with minimal effort...

You’ll find that, amazingly, you can start to touch type - slowly, of course - but without looking down, with high accuracy- and without having had to memorise the keyboard and work backwards from there to work out which fingers go where!

  • Also, importantly, you’ll have been introduced to the carefully designed series of practice exercises that will convert your accurate but very slow & deliberate skill into an accurate but fast and more automatic skill over the following weeks.

The PRACTICE PHASE (self paced, coached practice path)

You are then supported with frequent, in-depth email coaching as you consolidate and implement your learning over the following days and weeks with:

  • frequent personal practice (which you'll almost certainly find less challenging and easier to fit into your schedule than you might have expected!)

  • practising at whatever pace suits you best, to fit around your own life and commitments, with no need to be with a trainer at scheduled times.

  • and supported by frequent, in-depth and personalised email coaching as you:

    - use our website to do and submit your practice exercises to the trainer

    - so the trainer can respond with fast & frequent personal messages containing individual analysis and comment, constructive coaching and above all else: encouragement!

This coached PRACTICE PHASE will help you build (efficiently and with surprisingly little daily practice) the two things you can't get from the initial tuition...

  • habit
(being able to do what you learnt to do consciously in one day, but more automatically!)

and, as a direct by-product of the habit becoming formed...

  • the speed you need
(natural speed develops because habits form, not because you try to go fast!)

By the end of 4 weeks of such coached practice, you will have seen startling and very satisfying progress in these two areas (without loss of accuracy by the way!)

You may be ready to switch to touch typing all your work, all the time at that point and finally give up on your old style.

Or you may wish to continue your practice for a couple of weeks longer (using our website as before). If you feel you'd benefit from just a little more continued personal coaching, you will be able to subscribe to a few more weeks if you like).

Who is this course for?

This course is literally for anyone who needs to put words into computers...
(Google search terms, emails, chat conversations, reports, web-pages, tax returns, strategic documents, dissertations, etc... you name it!)

However long you've been typing already (using your own self-taught style), it's never too late to learn the 'proper', most efficient and least stressful technique - to use for the rest of your typing life (at work, and in your personal life).

Requirements

No special requirements (just two hands and a reasonable command of English - and online access for Zoom video-calls & web-based practice).

Even those with some physical impairments or conditions (eg hypermobility) often find that's of minimal hindrance. Those with dyslexia, dyspraxia or similiar conditions, may actually find they have advantages when it comes to the learning approach we use!

Career path

Nowadays, most careers & lifestyles need typing at least some of the time. Admin, sales, management; medics, lawyers, parents, students, retirees... we all type.

Poor typing often increases stress & frustration; multiplies errors; isn't fast enough & can be uncomfortable (or even damaging to health!); it can 'get in the way of you doing your job'!

Touch typing is no longer 'only for secretaries'.

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
