- Understand both the theory and practice of coaching supervision
- Know the ideal balance between supervisee led sessions and supervisor input
- Be aware of and able to manage ethical issues and conflicts of interest

Syllabus
In order to meet the syllabus, the training covers topics that include:
- Consolidating your coaching skills
- Defining coaching supervision and its purpose
- Skills and approaches needed to manage supervision sessions
- Contracting with supervisees
- A range of structures for holding supervision sessions
- Use and awareness of self within the supervision session
- Understanding the supervisor and supervisee dynamic
The core content is highly practical, and is focussed on the practice of holding supervision sessions. The literature and theory is covered briefly, with guidance to reading material. This frees up the sessions to be focussed and skills based.
Assessment
The three units of the ILM level 7 certificate in coaching supervision are:
- Understanding the principles and practice of coaching supervision
- Undertaking coaching supervision
- Reflecting on your own ability to perform effectively as a coaching supervisor
These are assessment by:
- A written assignment about the theory and practice of coaching supervision
- 20 hours of coaching supervision practice, including assessment of a coaching session, and completion of coaching logs
- A reflective journal, showing your development as a coaching supervisor
These assignments are undertaken after the training days have finished and are completed within 6 months.
Assignment support
Many adult learners have not undertaken formal assignments or study for many years. We understand this and provide a high level of support, so that everyone gets through the challenging times and completes their assignments. The support includes:
- Template answer books to follow
- Full guidance on completion of assignments
- Example assignments to draw inspiration from
- Marking and reviews of assignments, prior to final submission to the ILM
- Detailed feedback on your coaching practice
- Unlimited tutorial support and mentoring through the process
Our approach
Coaching supervision is a practical skill, with a theoretical basis. Our approach is that we practice the skill in the training room and study the theory outside of the training room.
This makes the training days highly focussed, active and practical, with opportunities to coach, be coached, receive feedback and work on coaching skills.
At the same time, we provide support to make sure the academic and study element is fully met, by providing resources, guidance and specific texts to study
Tutor team
The lead trainer for the Level 7 coaching programme is Charlie Warshawski. He has been coaching since 2007 and delivering ILM qualifications since 2014. His own coaching practice is of over 1000 hours, and he focusses on coaching leaders in education. He trained as a supervisor at Oxford Brookes under Tatiana Bachkirova
Charlie’s approach is inclusive, structured, rigorous and empathetic. Learners are highly supported, respectfully challenged and helped to become the best supervisors they can be.
Alongside Charlie is a team of experienced coach trainers, all of whom have taken the ILM qualification through Love Your Coaching. They support training days, feedback to supervisors and assessments.
Who is this course for?
People who enrol for this ILM level 7 programme are all coaches with at least one coaching qualification.
We distinguish, broadly, two categories of people who sign up for this programme.
Experienced coaches who have many years of coaching experience, and who are ready to move on to coaching supervision.
Coaches who have qualified more recently, probably in the past 5 years, and who have the opportunity and enthusiasm to learn how to be coaching supervisors.
Although these two groups may be different in their level of coaching experience, we find that both groups are able to develop well as supervisors. And we design the programme to meet the needs of both groups.
Requirements
This programme is open to coaches who:
- Have at least one coaching qualification (ILM L7, ICF or equivalent)
