Overview

Functional Skills Mathematics Level 3 is designed for learners who wish to strengthen and extend their mathematical knowledge for real-world, academic, and workplace applications.

This course focuses on developing confidence and competence in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, statistics, financial mathematics, and structured problem-solving. Emphasis is placed on practical mathematical reasoning, enabling learners to interpret information, make calculations accurately, and apply mathematical thinking in everyday and professional contexts.

The course is suitable for learners progressing beyond Level 2 mathematics, those returning to education, or individuals seeking to enhance numeracy skills for employment, further study, or professional development. This is an educational awareness and skills development programme and does not replace regulated Functional Skills or GCSE Mathematics qualifications.

Description

The Functional Skills Mathematics Level 3 course is structured into six core lectures, followed by a final assessment.

Lecture 1: Arithmetic Skills

This lecture strengthens foundational numeracy, including basic arithmetic operations, fractions, decimals, and percentages. Learners explore ratios and proportions, and apply the correct order of operations to multi-step calculations used in everyday and workplace contexts.

Lecture 2: Algebra

Learners develop algebraic skills including solving linear equations, working with inequalities, and graphing linear functions. The lecture also introduces quadratic equations, expressions, polynomials, and factoring to support higher-level mathematical reasoning.

Lecture 3: Geometry and Measurement

This lecture covers properties of shapes such as angles, triangles, and quadrilaterals. Learners calculate perimeter, area, volume, and surface area, and work confidently with both metric and imperial measurement systems.

Lecture 4: Statistics and Data Analysis

Learners explore data representation using tables and graphs, measures of central tendency (mean, median, and mode), probability and odds, and techniques for interpreting and analysing data to support informed decision-making.

Lecture 5: Financial Mathematics

This lecture focuses on practical financial skills including budgeting and personal finance, simple and compound interest calculations, loans and credit, and analysing income and expenses for everyday financial planning.

Lecture 6: Problem Solving and Critical Thinking

Learners apply mathematical knowledge to real-life problem-solving scenarios, develop critical thinking skills, and explore practical applications of mathematics in daily life and workplace environments.

The course concludes with a final exam assessing learners’ understanding of mathematical concepts, accuracy in calculations, and ability to apply mathematics confidently in practical situations.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the Functional Skills Mathematics Level 3 course, learners receive a free digital course completion certificate.

Optional premium certificates and academic transcripts are available separately for learners who require formal documentation for employment portfolios, CPD records, or further education purposes.

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for adult learners, school leavers, job seekers, professionals, career changers, and students preparing for further education who wish to strengthen applied mathematics skills beyond Level 2.

Requirements

No formal qualifications are required. Learners should have basic numeracy skills, a willingness to practise problem-solving, and access to the internet via a computer, tablet, or smartphone. Completion of the final assessment is required.
