Description
What you will learn (course structure)
Day 1: Confidence, credibility and communication
- The role of the first line manager as the pivot point between senior leaders, customers/suppliers and the frontline team
- The six essential skill sets: goals, communication, prioritisation and delegation, conflict and performance, self-motivation, motivating others
- Self-assessment across the six skills so you know where to focus first
- “Impression management”: how to build credibility quickly, so people see you as fair, capable and confident
- Setting and communicating clear goals using SMART targets, so standards and expectations are understood
- Clear communication techniques: accurate language, affirmative instructions, and better questioning skills
- Turning cynicism into useful critical thinking, so negative attitudes do not drag the team down
Day 1: Performance management and conflict (without the drama)
- How to address poor performance as guidance, not a reprimand
- How to protect someone’s ego while still being clear, objective and specific
- How to state what you want instead, and how to tell the difference between a reason and an excuse
- When to negotiate and when not to, plus timing, body language and voice tone
- Motivating people with the right kind of praise and appreciation (and why it matters)
- Practice using five common workplace scenarios (for example lateness, disrespect, aggressiveness, inappropriate humour and dealing with a difficult boss)
Day 2: Priorities, delegation and emotional leadership
- Prioritisation and time management: how to decide what matters most, and how to stay on track under pressure
- Delegation: how to hand work over properly so it gets done well and you are not forced to take it back
- Emotional management: how to manage your own emotions so you stay confident, optimistic and calm
- Creating and sustaining a positive team atmosphere, and avoiding common manager mistakes that create negativity
- Conversation control: how to use your words to make people feel stronger and more motivated
- A simple success formula for team performance: purpose, plan, action, feedback, change
- Constructive vs destructive criticism, and how to deliver feedback that improves performance rather than demotivates
- Summary and action plans, including commitments on how you will apply the skills at work
