Overview

Our 2-day comprehensive training provides detailed knowledge on a range of the most common mental health conditions and action steps needed to support individuals in or out of crisis.

On completion of this course the learner will be a qualified First Aider for Mental Health and can be assigned in the workplace to provide comprehensive guidance and support to peers who require mental health support. The learner will be able to provide signposting to professional help and support individuals when they are receiving professional assistance.

NOTE: A minimum of 4 participants is needed to run this course. If you are looking to send less than this higher costs will incur.

The course will be carried out over 4 sessions:

Session 1

  • Mental Health First Aid ​and the action plan
  • The MHFAider role ​and self-care
  • Helpful and unhelpful language ​
  • Useful models to support the role

Session 2

  • What influences mental health? ​
  • What is anxiety? ​
  • Crisis first aid
  • Active listening and empathy ​
  • What are eating disorders? ​
  • What is self-harm? ​
  • What is substance misuse? ​

Session 3

  • Applying the Mental Health First Aid action plan
  • What is depression? ​
  • What is suicide? ​
  • Crisis first aid ​continued
  • What is psychosis? ​

Session 4

  • Recovery and lived experience ​
  • Boundaries in the MHFAider role
  • Moving forward in the MHFAider role ​
  • My MHFA action plan ​


Session Length:
2-day course delivered over 4 sessions. ( 2 sessions per day )

Assessment: Practical demonstration of the First Aid for Mental Health Action Plan and a multiple-choice question paper. Professional discussion if online.

How it can be delivered: In-person at your venue or online. This course can support up to16 participants in-person and up to 12 online.

Set prices can be negotiated for larger groups. Travel/accommodation costs will apply if there is significant travel required outwith Inverness.

Are there any certificates students can receive after completion of the course?

  • A Level 2 Award in First Aid for Mental Health will be issued to the learner, subject to successful assessment.
  • Valid for 3 years.
