Overview

Epilepsy can start at any age and this module will cover all age groups. Whilst some types last for a limited time, and the person eventually stops having seizures, epilepsy is a life-long condition for many others. However people with epilepsy are just as capable as other people in their day-to-day lives, although some care must be taken. It is important to note that the majority of people with active epilepsy can satisfactorily control recurrent seizures, whilst optimal management improves health outcomes and minimises detrimental impacts on health.

Description

Epilepsy is now recognised as a disorder of the brain characterised not only by recurrent seizures, but also by its neurobiological, cognitive, psychological and social consequences. Epilepsy with a known cause is called symptomatic epilepsy, however, in the majority of cases, no cause can be found and this is called idiopathic epilepsy. Some children have what is known as cryptogenic epilepsy. This means that the doctors think there is probably a cause for the epilepsy, but they are unable to discover what it is.
