This Environmental Law course consists of twelve structured lectures, followed by an assessment and final exam. Each lecture builds progressively, developing a clear and coherent understanding of environmental law concepts and regulatory awareness.
The course begins by examining what environmental law is, outlining its purpose, scope, and key principles. Learners explore why environmental law exists and how it responds to environmental challenges created by industrialisation, development, and resource use.
International environmental law introduces global cooperation mechanisms, treaties, and conventions designed to address transboundary environmental issues. Environmental organisations explore the role of governmental, intergovernmental, and non-governmental bodies involved in environmental protection and policy development.
The National Environmental Policy Act is examined to illustrate how environmental legislation operates within national frameworks, highlighting policy objectives, assessment requirements, and governance principles from a comparative awareness perspective.
The environment and economics parts one and two explore the relationship between environmental protection and economic activity. Learners examine concepts such as cost–benefit analysis, externalities, sustainable growth, and policy trade-offs.
Climate change focuses on legal and policy responses to global climate challenges, examining mitigation, adaptation, and international cooperation approaches. Environmental impact assessment introduces awareness of assessment processes used to evaluate environmental consequences of proposed developments.
Nature conservation examines legal approaches to protecting ecosystems, wildlife, and natural resources. The Kyoto Protocol and Paris Agreement are explored to provide awareness of international climate agreements and their regulatory significance.
Sustainable development examines legal and policy frameworks that aim to balance environmental protection with social and economic needs. Enforcement of environmental law concludes the course by examining regulatory compliance, monitoring, and enforcement mechanisms from an awareness perspective.
