Description
Part of the journey of life, is the end. It is something that touches us all at some point, yet we typically do not have the tools to deal with it very well. The End of Life Therapy Diploma Course helps us to better understand the conclusion of life and how to address our thoughts and feelings about it openly and honestly. The aim being that we and our loved ones can enjoy our final days and pass over peacefully – having the support and compassion that is needed during this time.
Talking about our mortality is something that those of us in the modern Western world shy away from. But to provide beneficent end of life care, as either a professional, family member or friend, we need to understand why this is. We can then work on opening up a dialogue with those we care for, to ensure their wishes are met and they receive the care and support they want, on their terms. Similarly, this helps us to let those who care for us know what our wishes are when our time comes.
The End of Life Therapy Diploma Course begins with an exploration of our current views on death and how to approach the subject of final wishes – those of the people we care for and our own.
To this end, we look at palliative care and hospice care services, with the course detailing the differences and common misconceptions of each, what to expect from them, and how end of life therapy fits into both. We examine the basics of end-of-life therapy and care – exploring how it supports a person’s specific needs, beliefs, and deepest wishes.
It is a complexity of feelings that are often experienced by those coming to the end of their life and by those who love them. The course examines these feelings and takes you through Ku¨bler-Ross’s 5 Stages of Grief, as well as the different stages of health and dying that end-of-life therapy can serve, along with the various ways families need to be supported.
The End of Life Therapy Diploma Course takes a look at how you can help people to understand the legal options they have when it comes to their health, welfare and finances at the end of their life. In doing so, it examines ethical issues such as empowering people towards autonomous decision-making and the benefits of advance care planning.
To offer the right kind of support at the right time, it is important to be aware of the two phases of death and their associated symptoms. You’ll learn about these phases and the alternative and complementary therapies that can help, and you’ll gain an understanding of how to honour a person’s spiritual beliefs as they pass on.
Working with people as they journey towards the end of their life brings many rewards, but it can be emotionally, physically, and spiritually draining too. The End of Life Therapy Diploma Course concludes by explaining why self-care is essential in the provision of end-of-life care and support – offering suggestions of how to maintain a good diet and sleeping habits, and relaxation and mindfulness techniques that can be employed.
Who is this course for?
The End of Life Therapy Diploma Course deals with how we can better prepare and support those who are coming to the end of their lives, suffering a terminal illness or who have reached old age. Please note, however, that it does not deal with sudden deaths or deaths by suicide.
The course also helps each of us to understand how life ends, what we can do to support those who are close to passing on and their families, and how we can approach those we love to discuss what we would like to happen when our time comes.
