Description
We may not consider it every day but the Earth is an incredible place. Look in any direction within nature and, whilst we enjoy the landscape, countless processes explain what lies before us.
Earth science, also known as geoscience, is a collective field of studies that strive to understand the Earth, its waters, and atmosphere. Look up to the sky and atmospheric science tells us how clouds are formed, dive underwater and oceanography teaches us about the marine organisms you may encounter, climb a mountain and geology will inform you about how it got there.
This course is your introduction to Earth science and its subfields: geology, geophysics, glaciology, volcanology, hydrology and oceanography, atmospheric science, and geochemistry.
You’ll learn about Earth’s geological structure, how the planet’s physical and chemical processes are studied through geophysics and geochemistry, and its atmospheric processes through atmospheric science.
Glaciology will teach you about the different types of glaciers and how they form and move, whilst volcanology explores types of volcanoes and their associated processes, and hydrology and oceanography delve deep into rivers, ocean currents and more.
The course also looks at some of the important applications of Earth science and how it is making a difference.
By studying this course, you will:
- Gain an overview of Earth science
- Learn about each of its subfields
- Understand some of its practical applications
- Get to know your planet better
