Overview
The term safeguarding refers not only to child protection but also to the actions taken in order to ensure the welfare of children and young people. Children and young people under the age of 18 are one of the most vulnerable groups of people in our community. They are mostly defensless when faced with situations such as maltreatment and abuses. It is solely the responsibility of the society and the government to ensure the welfare of these children and young people by safeguarding them. Safeguarding children and young people can be done by protecting them from maltreatments and abuses, preventing impairment of their health and development and by promoting an environment for their proper mental and health care.
Failure of the society and the government to take necessary actions to safeguard children and young people may result in serious future consequences. Safeguarding should first start from a child’s home. The parents have to ensure that the welfare of their children are looked out for keenly. Teachers are also equally responsible to safeguard children and young people within the schooling facilities and premises. The government has also established certain legislation and policies that are designed to safeguard children and young people.
