Dignity at Work Overview
Every person, whether employee, employer, volunteer, or other, has the right to be treated with dignity and respect at work. Bullying and harassment is behaviour that makes someone feel intimidated or offended. It may be persistent, or it may be an isolated incident.
While employers have a legal responsibility to prevent bullying and harassment, everyone can contribute to creating an anti-bullying and harassment culture.
By the end of the course you will know how to spot common behaviours associated with workplace bullying, identify certain situations where bullying occurs in the workplace, and you will know the steps to take in resolving workplace bullying.

Dignity at Work Applicable Legislation
The Equality Act 2010 protects employees from harassment at work by their employer or colleagues. Harassment is unwanted or unwelcome behaviour which is meant to or has the effect of violating dignity or creating an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment. Sexual harassment is also unlawful under the Equality Act, as is bullying. Behaviours which constitute bullying and harassment are explored further in the course.
What is Bullying?
Bullying behaviour may be classed as:
- Offensive, intimidating, malicious or insulting behaviour
- An abuse or misuse of power
- An attempt to undermine, humiliate or deliberately hurt someone’s feelings
- Repeated or persistent behaviour
direct or indirect, whether verbal, physical, cyber or otherwise, conducted by one or more persons against another or others, at the workplace and/or in the course of employment, which could reasonably be regarded as undermining the individual's right to dignity at work. Bullying is not restricted to paid employment. Volunteers within the voluntary sector may also experience bullying behaviour.
Bullying at work risks the safety, health, and welfare of people at work.
