Decontamination and Infection Control in Dentistry - Module 2After completing this section you should be able to:

1. Understand the procedures necessary for the cleaning of instruments, including the:
a. General requirements for cleaning methods, the use of automated cleaning with washer-disinfectors, ultrasonic cleaning and its cleaning procedures
2. Carry out manual cleaning and how to avoid instrument damage
3. Rinse instruments after cleaning and or disinfection and its inspection and care before sterilization
4. How to care for your hand pieces
5. The process and types of sterilization and sterilizers, including daily testing, packing, storing, etc.
6. How to set up a decontamination area and where to get advice
7. General hygiene principles for hand washing, PEP’s (personal protective equipment), decontamination of surfaces, equipment and treatment areas
8. Decontamination of DUWL’s (Dental Unit Water Lines), Prostheses, orthodontic appliances and impressions.

Decontamination and Infection Control in Dentistry - Module 3After completing this section you should be able to:

1. Get acquainted with the Regulatory framework and compliance, including the BS/EN/ISO Standards and the DH guidelines.
2. Know the staff roles and responsibilities in the decontamination process
3. Understand about the procurement of decontamination equipment and instruments, including determining the load to be processed, the decontamination equipment: washer-disinfectors and sterilizers, ultrasonic cleaners, how to Select instruments as well as the Policy on new reusable instruments.
4. Have the knowledge about the general guidance on maintenance and testing of the decontamination equipment, which includes maintenance and servicing, validation and testing and how to handle the documentation
5. Understand about the Installation, validation, maintenance and testing of sterilizers, washer-disinfectors and ultrasonic cleaners.

Decontamination and Infection Control in Dentistry - Module 4After completing this section you should be able to:

1. Get acquainted with the additional information on test procedures, apart from those provided in the HTM01-05:
• Automatic control test and method
• Ultrasonic activity test and method
• Safety checks (weekly and yearly)
2. Understand about the approach and protocol for manual cleaning
3. Know the manual cleaning procedures or dental instruments
4. Have guidance on steam and water quality
5. Understand about the use of lubricants
