Millions of individuals operate in workplaces that expose them to dangerous substances, and the consequences of bad management, poor safety, and accidents can be fatal. In 2023/24, 126 individuals were killed at work. Exposure to hazardous working circumstances can also lead to lethal diseases such as asbestosis, which kills 13,000 people each year.

Hazardous chemicals can also cause injury (541,000 occupational injuries were documented in 2017/8) and illness (1.4 million workers had work-related illnesses). 56% of those are non-stress or musculoskeletal diseases). There are 7,000 new cases of self-reported work-related skin disorders, for example.

There are numerous obvious threats in the workplace, such as quarries, mines, metal finishers, woodworking and plastics manufacturers, but there are many more that are less visible, such as cleaners, construction, the automobile industry, and even food preparation.
