It offers the opportunity to study topics such as the American novel after 1999, new directions in theory, the graphic novel, urban culture, performance studies, bioethics, and cultures of conflict and dissent from Africa to the Middle East.

Assessment is by coursework and a compulsory dissertation.

Modules include: Post-1945: literature, culture, theory. Optional modules: the novel now: theory and fiction after 1999; the graphic novel: origins and aesthetics; culture, dissent and the Arab spring; writing global cities; theatre and performance theory; conflict, memory and resistance in African literature; performance and live art; biographical writing; contemporary south Asian women's writing; global/local Shakespeare; illness narrative as life writing; contemporary authors: kureishi and rushdie; performing rights; the 20th-century city; the transatlantic in literature: from caliban to cosmopolitanism; histories of the built environment.
