Description
On completion of the course, students will gain an understanding of consent within the healthcare landscape. You will also gain a deeper understanding of the challenges involved in consent, such as the role of advocates, what happens when treatment is refused or withdrawn, and what it means to treat without consent. You will discover more about the law, and what it says in relation to consent, as well as talk about how capacity is assessed, what is meant by informed consent, and when consent is a requirement.
You will learn about the complexities surrounding consent when a patient or service user lacks capacity. You will also consider the role of advocates in ensuring the rights of individuals that are unable to provide consent themselves.
We will cover law and consent, particularly the role of legal interventions and considerations surrounding consent for children and young people. we will also explore factors such as parental authority and the concept of Gillick competence.
You will learn about the critical aspects of managing the consent process in healthcare. We will look further into the roles and responsibility of each part involved, and also discuss the importance of record-keeping and documentation.
In order to complete the course, you must achieve 80% or more in the final multiple choice quiz.
You will earn 3 CPD points on completion of the course, this course will take around 3 hours to complete and the certificate will last for two years.
Units covered
- Unit 1 - Introduction to Consent in Health and Social Care - In the first unit we will cover what the law says in relation to consent, along with discussing how capacity is assessed and what factors can impact consent and what it means concerning young people.
- Unit 2 - The Challenges Involved in Consent - In this unit we will examine the implications of the Mental Health Act 2005 on consent processes and decision-making. We will also provide insights into the comprehensive consent process.
- Unit 3 - The Law and Consent - In the third unit we will explore the law and consent in healthcare, particularly focusing on the role of legal intervention. We will also look at the legal rights and responsibilities surrounding consent for minors.
- Unit 4 - Managing the Process of Consent - In the final unit we will talk about the critical aspects of managing the consent process in healthcare. You will also discuss the importance of record-keeping and documentation in consent management.
