Overview
Conflict Resolution - NHS CSTF is an online course aligned to the Skills For Health Statutory and Mandatory Training (SMT) requirements and learning outcomes for Conflict Resolution for UK Core Skills Training Framework (UK CSTF).
Why training in Conflict Resolution is necessary
Attacks and physical assaults against care and NHS staff in England have always been a problem but evidence shows there has been an increase in attacks on staff including emergency workers.
The 2021 NHS Staff survey, which received nearly 600,000 responses from 220 NHS trusts, found that:
- 14.3% of NHS staff have experienced at least one incident of physical violence from patients, service users, relatives or other members of the public in the last 12 months. In the ambulance sector, our paramedics have experienced a much higher volume of abuse (31.4%).
- The impact on staff is significant, with violent attacks contributing to 46.8% of staff feeling unwell as a result of work-related stress in the last 12 months, with 31.1% of these staff said to be thinking about leaving the organisation or the profession altogether.
Currently, in 2022, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) is prosecuting everyday, at least 50 assaults against emergency workers. However, this number does not reflect the true scale of the problem, as not all incidents against staff get prosecuted.
It is essential that all staff feel safe whilst at work. Violent behaviour can have an adverse personal effect on staff and it can impact negatively on the standards of patient care.
This course describes the impact that violence and aggression can have on an individual and steps that can be taken to avoid conflict.
