Overview
A conflict is some form of discord, disagreement or argument that is usually serious and most times, protracted in nature. Every person is unique having his own ideas and opinions. Therefore, when two or more people get involved in an activity, disagreements between them would naturally arise. As long as people have the ability to respect the ideas and opinions of others and have no difficulty in following ideas that are contradictory to the ones they hold, things will move along smoothly. A disagreement turns into a conflict when people not only hold on fast to their own beliefs and opinions but also refuse to agree to disagree in a gracious manner.
Workplaces are usually a divergent environment where people with very different natures meet and work together. Disagreements between colleagues are seen everywhere, like, in offices, retail outlets, factories and even in non-profit organizations. If the workplace provides a setting for at least two people, there are bound to be differences in opinion. These disagreements are admissible until they lead to a conflict. Conflicts have the tendency to make the atmosphere difficult for all the parties involved in it. This in turn can lead to a decrease in their level of performance and waste of valuable resources such as time. If left unresolved, conflicts can prove disastrous to the business.
