This course is designed to aid the understanding of potential hazards the construction worker may face on site. It provides a practical summary of health, safety, welfare and environmental issues. It identifies the delegate's responsibilities for looking after themselves and others, outlines the employer's duties and explains what should be done if the worker thinks that anyone's health and safety is being put at risk.

By the end of the CITB Health and Safety Awareness course, delegates will be able to:

Individual Responsibilities and Legal Understanding

• Understand individual health and safety responsibilities - Recognise why they are carrying out health and safety duties, what is expected of them, and how they contribute to safety in the workplace
• Know their legal duties - Understand the basics of health and safety law and how it applies to construction workers on site
• Identify employer responsibilities - Understand employer duties for providing a safe working environment and protecting worker welfare

Site Safety and Hazard Awareness

• Identify typical construction hazards - Recognise the range of potential hazards that could occur while working on a construction site
• Understand how hazards are controlled - Know the control measures used to manage and reduce risks on construction sites
• Avoid potential dangers - Learn practical advice on how to identify and avoid hazards during daily work activities
• Work safely at all times - Appreciate the need to perform all tasks safely and in accordance with site rules and procedures
• Report unsafe acts and conditions - Understand the importance of reporting unsafe acts, near misses, and hazardous conditions to prevent accidents

Risk Assessment and Safe Working

• Understand risk assessments - Know what risk assessments are and why they are legally required for construction activities

Site Organisation and Management

• Understand site organisation - Know how their role fits into the control and management structure of the construction site
• Recognise management systems - Understand how health and safety is organised and managed on construction sites

Health, Welfare and Environmental Awareness

Examination Format

• Duration: 30 minutes
• Format: Closed book multiple-choice examination
• Number of questions: 25 multiple-choice questions
• Pass mark: 80% (20 out of 25 questions correct) OR 83% (25 out of 30 marks) depending on marking scheme
• Safety-critical questions: All 3 safety-critical questions MUST be answered correctly to pass
