Description
In this Child Bereavement course will cover the topics of grief and bereavement, with an overall understanding of how to identify a bereaved child, you will explore how children understand and respond to loss, particularly in different age groups. The different factors that affect bereavement will be explored, including how the type of death can impact the child’s response.
You will look at how to integrate children who have experienced bereavement back into school, and the role of the SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator). You will also look at the different ways of explaining death to children.
You will also consider how to design assemblies after the death of someone in the community, and how to incorporate support from counsellors. You will also look at how to create appropriate memorials, and how to support parents.
You will also look at how you can support yourself and your team, including recommendations for methods of self-care, including how to set boundaries with staff, students and parents. Useful links to resources and charities that can help students, teachers and parents with the bereavement and grief process.
In order to complete the course, you must achieve 80% or more in the final multiple choice quiz.

Units Covered
- Unit 1 – Introduction to Child Bereavement – In the first unit of the child bereavement course, you will uncover concepts of bereavement and grief, looking in depth at the different forms that they can take. You will also look at the role of the school in the process of child grief and bereavement.
- Unit 2 -The Impacts of Bereavement on Children – This unit will explore the long term and short-term impact of grief, it will also examine the different stages of grief and what they may entail, depending on the child.
- Unit 3 – How to Support Pupils who are Bereaved – In this unit you will look at how to support pupils when another school pupil dies, a teacher dies, or when someone in their family dies. You will be given techniques for breaking the news of the death of a student or teacher to parents and carers.
- Unit 4 – How to Support Yourself and Your Team – In the final unit of the child bereavement course you will explore how to go about sharing your feelings with other members of staff, and making sure that staff-wellbeing is held as a priority.
