Lecture 1 introduces chemistry as a scientific discipline, exploring what chemistry is, how the scientific method is applied, and how matter is classified based on its properties. Learners examine elements, compounds, and mixtures, gaining a foundation for understanding chemical substances.
Lecture 2 focuses on atomic structure, covering the structure of the atom, atomic number, mass number, isotopes, and electron configuration. This lecture builds understanding of how atomic structure influences chemical behaviour.
Lecture 3 examines chemical bonding, introducing different types of chemical bonds, including ionic and covalent bonding. Learners explore Lewis dot structures and molecular geometry, developing insight into how atoms bond and form molecules.
Lecture 4 explores chemical reactions, covering types of reactions, balancing chemical equations, stoichiometry, and examples of chemical reactions in everyday life. Learners gain understanding of how substances interact and change during reactions.
Lecture 5 focuses on acids and bases, examining their properties, the pH scale, acid-base reactions, and common acids and bases. This lecture helps learners understand how acidity and alkalinity affect chemical behaviour.
Lecture 6 introduces chemical kinetics, covering reaction rates, factors affecting reaction speed, catalysts and inhibitors, and basic reaction mechanisms. Learners explore why some reactions occur faster than others.
Lecture 7 examines chemical thermodynamics, introducing energy changes in reactions, enthalpy, entropy, Gibbs free energy, and reaction spontaneity. This lecture explains how energy influences chemical processes.
Lecture 8 introduces organic chemistry basics, covering hydrocarbons, functional groups, and common organic reaction types. Learners gain awareness of how organic chemistry relates to fuels, materials, and biological systems.
Assessment includes a final exam to evaluate understanding of chemistry concepts, terminology, and scientific reasoning.
Certification
Upon successful completion of the Chemistry Fundamentals Level 2 course, learners will receive a free digital certificate provided by Reed confirming their achievement and knowledge development. After obtaining the Reed certificate, learners will also receive a provider-issued course completion certificate, subject to verification of the Reed certificate. Learners may additionally choose to order a premium certificate and academic transcript, available in both hardcopy and softcopy formats, based on individual needs and for an additional cost.
