Popularity of equity release products are increasing, £1.06bn of property wealth was accessed via equity release products in Q1 2020, up by 14% from the previous year (source: Equity Release Council). As a result, the need for qualified professionals has significantly increased and advisors are looking to upskill to guide their clients through the process.

As a qualified CeMAP Mortgage Advisor, gaining an accreditation to advise on equity release will add to your skill set and increase your salary potential.

You’ll develop specialist knowledge to understand different customer needs, be able to advise on the different types of equity release products and associated risks.

Following on from your CeMAP Modules 1-3 certification, the CeRER Level 3 certificate will give you the right to practice and allow you to advise property owners on how to release tax-free money from their property to finance their lives and for gifting family members.

The CeRER professional qualification is approved by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), accredited by Ofqual and awarded by the London Institute of Banking & Finance.

Learn how to successfully examine individual client requirements and offer them the correct advice on a range of products and associate risks.

During this course you’ll learn:

  • The impact of equity release schemes on customers’ future options
  • The FCA regulatory explanation of a lifetime mortgage and a home reversion plan
  • How to match different types of equity release schemes to your customers’ needs
  • The suitability and affordability of the different types of equity release schemes
  • The relative advantages and disadvantages of the different types of equity release arrangements and alternatives
  • How to assess the risks to customers who take out equity release schemes and when these might arise
  • The rules relating to state benefits as well as taxation

CeRER Course Units

There are two course units:

Unit 1 – Fundamentals of Equity Release (FOER)

  • The principles of equity release
  • Types of schemes available and the circumstances in which equity release may be appropriate
  • The advantages, disadvantages and potential risks to consumers

Unit 2 – Equity Release Solutions (EQRS)

  • Selecting suitable equity release solutions to meet circumstances of different types of consumers

How is it assessed?

When the time comes to take your exam, we will guide you through the process.

The core Equity Release module is assessed through a single 2 hour objective exam, split into two units. Unit 1 is 50 multiple-choice questions, and Unit 2 comprise 3 case studies with 10 linked multiple-choice questions.

The exam is conducted either at a Pearson VUE testing centre or take your exam online, in the comfort of your home.

The exam (including registration fee) is not included in the cost of the course.

All we ask is that you:

  • Attend all class days and complete all assignments
  • Take the exam within 30 days of completing your Virtual Classroom training
  • Request your course re-enrolment within 30 days of the failed exam attempt

Please Note: Students retaking the course are required to use any materials or books distributed to them in their original course session. Failure to provide these materials will result in the student being charged for replacement materials.

What does study method mean?

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

What are CPD hours/points?

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on, many of which can be completed online.

What is a ‘regulated qualification’?

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

What is an ‘endorsed’ course?

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body’s logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
