Overview

It is thought that 1 in 4 people in the UK will be affected by allergies at some point in their life.

Allergies are particularly common in children and if you work in childcare, it's likely you will be caring for a child with an allergy. Learn about common allergies, how the body reacts to allergens, common symptoms, how to prevent/minimise the risk of direct contact, and the actions to take if you suspect an allergic reaction. This course is suitable for parents, carers, and childcare practitioners.

Description

Learning outcomes

  • If a child comes into contact with an allergen they are sensitive to, they may experience an allergic reaction. Understand the different ways you can come into contact with allergens and know how to prevent it, or limit the exposure. This includes advice on food hygiene and reducing the risk of cross-contamination of food allergens.
  • Understand common allergies, such as hayfever and dust allergy, and common food allergies, such as milk and nuts
  • Know the signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction and first aid advice about anaphylaxis
  • Gain an insight into living with allergies and how you can keep your home environment safe and hygienic for people for allergies

Advantages of this course

  • Written by an experienced childminder, this course gives practical advice on how to care for a child with an allergy, work with the parents and carers to create an allergy management plan, and how to act when a child has an allergic reaction
  • The reading and presentation sections of this lesson give advice on caring for someone with hayfever, pet and animal allergy, dust allergy, mould allergy, latex allergy, and the most common food allergies. The difference between allergy and intolerance is also explained. Medication can help manage the symptoms of some allergies, and is essential for someone with a severe allergy who has been prescribed an adrenaline auto injector. This course touches on some of the medication available and provides useful information on adrenaline auto injectors.
  • Additional activities encourage you to reflect on your learning
  • There is also suggested extended reading that gives both practical information and links to websites to expand knowledge
