Either way, you’ll master a variety of barbering skills – including clipper cutting and scissor-over-comb techniques – in Build Your Skills – Short Back & Sides. With lessons from Dale Ted Watkins and Stacey Broughton, you’ll learn these 5 classic male haircuts:

  • Men’s Basic Uniform Layer – taught by Dale Ted Watkins
  • Short Back & Sides – perfect this traditional look
  • Scissors-Over-Comb Crop – build on your skills from previous tutorials
  • Short Flat Graduation – Stacey Broughton is your instructor
  • Clipper Guard Crop – an essential for barbers

Remember, with MHDPro, you’re in control of your development as a barber. Embed techniques thoroughly with our unique See-Do-Stop-Check methodology – and use them confidently throughout your career. What’s more, this course will earn you 10 hours CPD and a VTCT & ITEC-endorsed certificate. Don’t forget to download and display it to impress clients and employers, present and future – and use it as evidence of learning towards your formal diploma.

What You Get From Each Lesson

Lesson 1 – Men’s Basic Uniform Layer

Delight your male clients with your basic layering skills and a tailored fringe. Dale Ted Watkins demonstrates blunt and point cutting, layering and shading – showing you how to master the basic uniform layer. This timeless classic of men’s cuts exudes Ivy League style and is easily adaptable to suit individual client needs.

Lesson 2 – Short Back & Sides

Learn how to create the traditional short back & sides – aka the crew cut – in lesson 2. With Dale Ted Watkins as your instructor again, you’ll learn how to use your clippers-over-comb technique to create a square refined shape – with special emphasis on connection of the top lengths and placement of corners. You’ll also get to grips with the scissors-over-comb technique to tailor the fringe area.

Lesson 3 – Scissors-Over-Comb Crop

This course is all about building your skills – and in lesson 3, you’ll use techniques you’ve mastered in the previous 2 tutorials. Dale demonstrates how to use your scissors-over-comb technique throughout the top, tailoring it to your client using razoring and freehand cutting. The key to your success? Working against the grain of the hair growth for an even shape to create an edgy look for younger clients.

Lesson 4 – Short Flat Graduation

Stacey Broughton takes charge for lesson 4 to demonstrate the short flat graduated shape. Leveraging techniques including scissors-over-comb and clippers-over-comb, you’ll combine graduation, layering and disconnection to create a neat backdrop. This is a versatile style, which can be worn up in a flat quiff or smoothed down for a more formal finish.

Lesson 5 – Clipper Guard Crop

Dale is back for lesson 5, where he shows you how to create the beautifully blended and meticulously crafted clipper guard crop. An essential for barbers, you’ll learn how to combine clipper cutting, clippers-over-comb, tension and graduation to achieve a tailored look. Your clients will love this clean, sculpted style.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
