Overview

The Biology Fundamentals Level 3 course is designed for learners who want to develop a structured understanding of the core principles that underpin modern biological science. Biology is explored as a foundational discipline that explains life at molecular, cellular, organismal, and ecological levels, supporting understanding across health, environmental, and life-science fields.

This course introduces key areas of Biology, including cell biology, genetics, molecular biology, evolution, physiology, ecology, and environmental biology. Learners gain insight into how biological systems function, how life evolves and adapts, and how scientific evidence is used to investigate living organisms and their interactions.

Biology is presented as an academic and evidence-based science rather than a vocational or laboratory-licensing programme. The course focuses on conceptual understanding, scientific reasoning, data interpretation, and ethical awareness rather than hands-on professional practice.

By engaging with practical skills awareness, laboratory concepts, and scientific communication, learners develop biological literacy and analytical confidence. This course provides a strong foundation for further study, academic progression, or support roles related to Biology and the wider life sciences.

Description

This Biology Fundamentals Level 3 course consists of six structured lectures, followed by an assessment, each designed to progressively build scientific understanding and biological knowledge.

The course begins with an introduction to Biology, exploring the scope of biological science, the scientific method, basic chemistry for biologists, cell structure and function, and key biomolecules that support life processes.

Genetics and molecular biology examine Mendelian inheritance, DNA structure and replication, gene expression and regulation, genetic engineering concepts, biotechnology applications, and patterns of human inheritance.

Evolution and biodiversity explore natural selection, mechanisms of evolution, classification and taxonomy, biodiversity, conservation, ecosystems, and biomes, providing a framework for understanding the diversity of life on Earth.

Physiology and homeostasis introduce human anatomy and physiology, major organ systems, homeostatic regulation, immune function, disease processes, and reproductive biology.

Ecology and environmental biology examine ecological principles, population and community ecology, environmental challenges, conservation strategies, and field study concepts, highlighting Biology’s role in understanding and protecting natural systems.

Practical laboratory skills focus on laboratory safety awareness, experimental design, data analysis, conducting biological investigations conceptually, recording results, presenting scientific data, and developing report-writing and communication skills.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the Biology Fundamentals Level 3 course, learners receive a free digital certificate from Reed confirming course completion.
