This online Basic Life Support training course was developed to meet the required learning outcomes in the Resuscitation Council (UK) 2015 guidelines for the management of cardiopulmonary resuscitation in adults, including choking (basic life support training algorithms).

Course aims and objectives

The aims of this online Basic Life Support training course are to:

  • Provide sufficient knowledge and skills to be able to recognise and respond to signs of clinical deterioration.
  • Provide a clear understanding of the legislation and the current Resuscitation Council (UK) guidance on basic life support.

Learning objectives

On completion of this online Basic Life Support training course, the learner will be able to:

  • Establish the signs of clinical deterioration in adults.
  • Discuss how to respond when cardiac arrest is suspected.
  • Establish how to open the airway of a collapsed adult.
  • Explore how to initiate and maintain effective chest compressions and rescue breaths.
  • Review the principles of DNACPR.
  • Present how to report and record details of an emergency event accurately.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this online Basic Life Support training course, the learner will be able to:

  • Recognise and respond to patients with clinical deterioration or cardiorespiratory arrest, escalating care in accordance with local policy.
  • Initiate an appropriate emergency response, including choking management, and the use of the recovery position.
  • Demonstrate how an automated external defibrillator (AED) can be operated safely and appropriately.
  • Explain the importance of undertaking any resuscitation interventions within the limits of your personal capabilities and context of any previous training received.
