Why is basic life support training important?

Rapid response to emergency situations can save lives, making life support training critically important for healthcare staff. These resources can help train participants to provide basic life support to people of all ages, and can act as refresher material for those who have already completed similar training.

Survival rates for an unconscious individual are increased by up to 60 percent through prompt resuscitation. With this in mind, life support training aims to increase learners’ confidence when responding to emergency situations. This enables them to act swiftly and effectively to give the affected individual the best chance of recovery.

This training also outlines the different approaches when providing life support to adults, children, and infants, in order to minimise accidental harm being caused in the process of resuscitation. Furthermore, life support training explains how to recognise and respond to cardiopulmonary arrest, including safe usage of defibrillators.

It is important to understand that the objective of providing basic life support is not to 'treat' the person but to buy some valuable time until the emergency medical aid arrives. BLS procedure is mainly used on people experiencing cardiac arrest or respiratory failure.

It is essential for those working in healthcare and social care environments to complete appropriate resuscitation training in line with their roles.

This online basic life support (bls) course was developed to meet the required learning outcomes in the Skills for Health’s UK Core Skills Training Framework (CSTF) and Care Quality Commission (CQC) recommendations for health and social care providers.

What is the Skills for Health’s UK ‘Core Skills Training Framework’?

There is increasing recognition that there are wide variations in the quality and consistency of healthcare training provided across the UK.

To minimise these challenges, The Mandatory Training Group works with various UK health and social care organisations to develop statutory and mandatory training courses in line with Skills for Health’s UK Core Skills Training Framework (CSTF).

This includes mandatory training courses in the Skills for Health’s UK Core Skills Training Framework – CSTF Statutory Mandatory Training Subject Guide Version 1.3 , Skills for Health Clinical Care UK Core Skills Training Framework Subject Guide April 2015 and other awareness courses for health and social care workers.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
