Overview

Do you comply with asbestos regulations? Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health 2002 (COSHH) regulations, employers have a legal duty to provide adequate control of employees’ exposure to harmful substances in the workplace.

Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 states that any employee liable to be exposed to asbestos must be given adequate information, instruction and training to ensure they can safeguard themselves and other employees and carry out their work effectively. This level of training is known as Category A Asbestos Awareness training.

The Asbestos Awareness Course is a detailed introduction to this hazardous substance. Students who study this course will learn how to recognise asbestos, the dangers and long-term health risks as well as how to carry out a detailed risk assessment to identify and reduce the risk of exposure. Once you have studied this course you will possess the knowledge and skills to identify whether your work has the potential to uncover asbestos, what to do if you find it and the steps you should take if you or your colleagues are unintentionally exposed to this material during the course of your work. Employers are obliged to safeguard your health and safety and part of this is delivering high quality training to increase asbestos awareness.

Description

Our Asbestos Awareness course is one of the most comprehensive training programmes that you can study. The course is divided into 7 easy to follow modules:

Module 1 – Asbestos Explained – The introductory module of this course will guide you through the basics of asbestos, looking specifically at what it is, why it is so dangerous and problematic and the common sources of asbestos in buildings.

Module 2 – Asbestos Identification – In the second module you will look in more detail at the different types of asbestos and that some forms of this material are more harmful than others. Once you can identify the different types, you will learn about the impact of asbestos on your health and the specific diseases that can result from exposure.

Module 3 – Health, Safety and Regulations – In module 3 you will look at the various pieces of legislation that exist to protect employees and members of the public from asbestos exposure and how it should be dealt with if found. You will learn the obligations of your employer and the importance of identifying asbestos containing materials.

Module 4 – Surveys and Obligations of Employees – As you develop your knowledge you will begin to explore employee obligations in terms of working with asbestos, the importance of surveys and the different types that relate to asbestos.

Module 5 – Risk Assessments – Risk assessing your workplace is important. By studying this module you will learn the components of risk assessments and the step by step process of conducting your own workplace assessment to identify and reduce the risks associated with asbestos exposure.

Module 6 – Asbestos Containing Materials – Within Module 6 you will learn what an asbestos containing material is, what the risks are of these materials and how to assess the condition of materials and the importance of using Personal Protective Equipment.

Module 7 – Dealing with Emergencies – The final module in the course will teach you everything you need to know about dealing with an emergency situation such as an asbestos leak or exposure and the correct steps to take to keep the risk to an absolute minimum.

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
