Overview

This programme aims to develop the creativity and skills required in an age of rapid cultural and technological change; students learn through innovative, practical research and an understanding of different contexts, traditions and histories; the emphasis of the programme is the development of auteur–artist–filmmakers with a relationship to the industry; the programme is very much about practising animation within a visually sophisticated, innovative and multi-disciplinary art and design context; scriptwriting; gesture, timing and storyboarding; casting and directing actors and composers and animation techniques can be studied.

Requirements:

Applicants are normally expected to have a degree in art and design or equivalent experience; a portfolio submission including a selection of their moving image work, no longer than 15 minutes, demonstrating their aptitude for sequential thinking and directing abilities. A digital portfolio of support work demonstrating other aspects of your ideas and skills, which may include three-dimensional objects, drawings, photographs, scripts, storyboards, etc is helpful in the selection process. If invited for interview, then additional material and original artwork and/or models may be required.

Assessment Methods:

Assessment is based on examinations and presentations, which include screenings of work.

Modules:

1st year: Students choose 1 elective from the School of Communications and participate in all of the animation workshops; 1st year project; assist a 2nd year student with their graduation project; dissertation. Year 2: Learning and teaching methods; workshops: creative; special techniques; camera and lighting; directing; casting actors; sound. Tutorials: Individual tutorials; groups; year group; reflection; workshop crits; professional feedback session.
