Overview

Artificial intelligence and digital technology are now an important part of academic life. They can support learning, communication and productivity, but may also contribute to digital fatigue, information overload, reduced concentration, academic pressure and uncertainty about responsible technology use.

This intermediate online professional learning course explores the relationship between AI, digital wellbeing and mental health in higher education. It provides practical guidance for recognising technology-related stress and supporting students to develop healthier, more sustainable approaches to studying in digitally enabled environments.

Learners will explore how excessive screen use, constant connectivity, online comparison, digital distractions, AI-related uncertainty and academic-integrity concerns can affect motivation, confidence, attention and emotional wellbeing. The course also considers how these pressures may affect students with ADHD, autism, anxiety, depression and other mental-health or neurodivergent profiles.

The course focuses on inclusive, ethical and supportive practice. Learners will develop skills to recognise potential signs of digital burnout, academic stress, technology-related anxiety and disengagement, while understanding the importance of professional boundaries and appropriate signposting. It does not prepare learners to diagnose or provide clinical treatment
