Course Structure

The AAT Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Accounting teaches the basic principles of accountancy, including double entry bookkeeping, and provides the skills your team needs to succeed in entry-level or accounting support roles.

It's highly flexible - live online classrooms during lunchtimes, evenings, and weekends make it easy to fit learning around work commitments. They're also recorded so they can be watched and re-watched as many times as needed.

It should take around 340 hours to complete.

The course consists of five separate units. They are:

  • Bookkeeping transactions
  • Bookkeeping controls
  • Elements of costing
  • Using accounting software
  • Working effectively in finance

Student Support

Students will be supported by their personal AAT tutor. As well as being AAT experts and professional accountants, all our tutors are specialists in distance learning. Our student support coordinators are also on hand to help delegates navigate course materials and any technical issues that may arise.


The course is accredited by the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT), the UK’s largest professional body for accounting technicians. AAT qualifications are the gold standard in practical accounting - they train over 70,000 people around the world each year, and award more than 90% of all vocational accounting qualifications.

The AAT Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Accounting (AQ2016 Syllabus) is worth 34 UCAS credits. It sits on the Qualifications and Credit Framework at Level 2, or Level 5 in the Scottish system.

Who is this course for?

This course is perfect for accounting teams aiming to build on entry-level accounting experience. It'll qualify trainees for a number of accountancy jobs and provide progression to AAT study at higher levels.


Applicants don't need any prior experience or qualifications to enrol, but should have reasonable numeracy and communication skills and an interest in how business works.

Students wishing to enrol on this course must be 19 years or older with proficiency in the English language or an IELTS score of 5.5 or equivalent.

What does study method mean?

What is an ‘endorsed’ course?

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body’s logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as ABC Awards and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
