The AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting is your first step towards a successful accounting and finance career. You don’t need any prior experience or qualifications to enrol, making it perfect if you’re just starting out or if you need to bring useful financial knowledge to your current role.
It’s focused on giving you practical, real-world knowledge of accounting and finance that you can put to use from day one.
You'll learn the basic principles of accountancy, including double entry bookkeeping, and gain the skills you need to hold entry-level or accounting support roles. You can also continue your study with the Advanced and Professional Diplomas and become qualified for senior accounting roles.
The course is accredited by the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT), the UK’s largest professional body for accounting technicians, so it’s internationally recognised and sought-after by employers.
It's highly flexible, so you can set your own timetable and study at your own pace. Live online classrooms during lunchtimes, evenings, and weekends make it easy to fit learning around your life.
The AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting (AQ2016 Syllabus) is worth 34 UCAS credits. It sits on the Qualifications and Credit Framework at Level 2, or Level 5 in the Scottish system.
It should take you around 340 hours to complete.

- Elements of costing
- Using accounting software
- Work effectively in finance

Who is this course for?
This course is perfect if you're looking to start your accountancy career or have minimal accounting experience. It'll qualify you for a number of accountancy jobs and provide progression to AAT study at higher levels.
You don't need any prior experience or qualifications to enrol, but you should have reasonable numeracy and communication skills and an interest in how business works.
You must be over 19, and if English isn't your first language, you'll need an IELTS score of 5.5 or equivalent.
When you finish the AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting you'll be on your way to becoming a fully qualified Accounting Technician.
