AAT Level 3 Course Structure
The AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting consists of four key units:
Financial Accounting: Preparing Financial Statements includes principles of accounting and double-entry bookkeeping, non-current asset accounting and depreciation, asset disposal and adjustments, trial balance preparation, final accounts preparation, profit and loss appropriation accounts, and financial statements for partnerships.
Management Accounting Techniques covers costing systems and cost analysis, budgeting and variance analysis, cost allocation and apportionment, and decision-making using management accounting data.
Business Awareness includes ethical working practices in accounting, business structures and governance, legal frameworks affecting businesses, sustainability and professional responsibilities, and the impact of technology in business environments.
Tax Processes for Businesses covers VAT regulations and compliance, VAT return preparation and submission, Making Tax Digital (MTD) requirements, VAT errors, penalties and corrections, and communication of VAT information.
Practical Accountancy Training (FREE)
To improve employability, we provide FREE practical training using real accounting software, including Sage 50, Xero, and QuickBooks. Training includes setting up companies (cash or standard VAT schemes), customising chart of accounts and nominal codes, double-entry bookkeeping, sales and purchase invoice processing, customer and supplier account management, bank reconciliation, VAT return preparation and submission to HMRC, and financial reporting and error correction.

Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for the AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting. However, it is strongly recommended that learners complete AAT Level 2 or have equivalent bookkeeping knowledge, as Level 3 builds on key accounting fundamentals such as double-entry bookkeeping, VAT, and basic financial processes. A good understanding of English and maths is also beneficial to support successful completion of the course.
Career path
Upon completion of the AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting, you will have the skills and knowledge to work competently as an Accounts Assistant.
