The AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting course will develop your skills in advanced bookkeeping, spreadsheet software, become well versed in dealing with the concepts of budgeting and financial planning, develop the skills to prepare and submit tax returns and build business awareness through an in-depth look at economics, digital technology, ethics, business structures.

On the AAT Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting course, you'll learn to draft financial statements for limited companies, recommend strategy for accounting systems, and build and present complex management accounting reports. You'll gain key financial management skills and pick two specialist study areas.

Once you've passed, you'll automatically become an affiliate AAT member. You'll also be able to achieve internationally recognised professional MAAT status if you have the right work experience by applying for full membership.

For the first half of this of this combined qualification, the AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting, you'll study the following four units:

  • Preparing Financial Statements
  • Management Accounting Techniques
  • Tax Processes for Businesses
  • Business Awareness

The second part of this combined qualification, AAT Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting, has five units. Three are mandatory, then you'll choose two more from five possible options.

The mandatory units are:

  • Drafting and Interpreting Financial Statements
  • Applied Management Accounting
  • Internal Accounting Systems and Controls

The optional units you can choose from are:

  • Business Tax
  • Personal Tax
  • Audit and Assurance
  • Credit and Debt Management
  • Cash and Financial Management


There are four computer-based assessments for the AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting course, and five computer-based assessments for the AAT Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting course, all of which you’ll sit at an AAT exam centre.

You’ll also complete online mock tests throughout your course to ensure you’re well-prepared for your exams.

Who is this course for?

To take this AAT Level 3 and Level 4 Diplomas in Accounting course, you'll need the AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting, or some accounting experience in an entry-level or support role.

Students wishing to enrol on this course must be proficient in the English language or have an IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent. Students must also have access to Microsoft Word and Excel to complete the course.

Career path

On completion of the AAT Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting, graduates will be fully qualified Accounting Technicians. Graduates will also automatically become affiliate members of AAT, and can apply for internationally-recognised professional MAAT status.

What does study method mean?
