This Biology Fundamentals course consists of seven structured lectures, followed by an assessment, each designed to build essential knowledge across the major areas of biology.
Lecture 1 introduces biology as a scientific discipline, exploring the nature of biology, the scientific method, and foundational concepts in cell biology. Learners gain understanding of how biological knowledge is developed through observation, experimentation, and evidence.
Lecture 2 focuses on biochemistry and cell biology, covering biomolecules such as carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids, alongside enzymes and enzyme kinetics. Learners also explore cell structure and function, forming a basis for understanding cellular processes.
Lecture 3 examines genetics, introducing Mendelian and non-Mendelian inheritance, DNA structure and replication, and an overview of genetic engineering and biotechnology. This lecture builds understanding of how genetic information is stored, transmitted, and applied.
Lecture 4 explores evolution, covering natural selection, adaptation, evidence for evolution, and mechanisms of evolutionary change. Learners develop understanding of how species evolve over time and how biological diversity arises.
Lecture 5 focuses on ecology, examining ecosystems, populations, biodiversity, conservation, and human impact on the environment. This lecture connects biological principles to environmental challenges and sustainability.
Lecture 6 introduces physiology and homeostasis, covering animal physiology systems, plant physiology, and mechanisms of regulation. Learners explore how organisms maintain internal balance and respond to environmental changes.
Lecture 7 develops investigative skills, focusing on experimental design, data analysis, and practical laboratory skills awareness. This lecture strengthens scientific thinking and prepares learners for further biological study.
Assessment includes a final exam to evaluate understanding of biology concepts, processes, and scientific reasoning.
Certification
Upon successful completion of the Biology Fundamentals course, learners will receive a free digital certificate provided by Reed confirming their achievement and skill mastery. After obtaining the Reed certificate, learners will also receive a provider-issued course completion certificate, subject to verification of the Reed certificate.
