Overview

What’s the secret to commanding attention and respect when someone walks into a room? Is it charisma? Do you have that kind of presence? If not, is it something you would like to develop? Some people immediately command the attention and respect that they want. Sometimes it can come naturally, but even the most respectable people may need training in certain areas to develop the executive presence they desire.

Description

The King’s Speech

An example of someone developing their executive presence is the story of King George VI, popularised in the 2010 film The King’s Speech, starring Colin Firth. His family enlisted the help of a speech therapist to help with George’s nervous stammer which hampered him throughout his time as king. Stammers were thought of as a mental weakness at the time and the development that George went through helped to build his presence while in a position of authority that was also heavily publicised.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
