What we do

Lochinver House Schoolis a Boys’ Day Preparatory School situated in Little Heath on the outskirts of Potters Bar.  The school was founded in 1947 and now has a roll of 350 boys which it draws from both Hertfordshire and North London.  The school is very well equipped with modern purpose built classrooms, a Theatre, a Sports Hall, two science laboratories, an Information Technology suite, DT and music rooms.  It owns all of its own land and buildings and has extensive playing fields.  The Headmaster is a member of the Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS).  The School was judged excellent in all areas at its last ISC integrated inspection and was found fully compliant in October 2017.  The school is in all ways a very successful educational establishment and has an outstanding reputation in the County, being the largest all boys’ day preparatory school north of the M25.

The school’s academic results speak for themselves. Without modesty, this year we can confirm an impressive 21 scholarships (so far) offered to 16 boys and in 2017 all boys achieved places in their first choice of senior school. Over the last 5 years, boys have been awarded an average of seven scholarships to leading independent schools.  We send boys to a large number of senior schools, 22 in the last 10 years, such as City of London, Haberdashers, Haileybury, Merchant Taylors’ and St Albans.   The school benefits from clear core values and a Lochinver Language of learning which focuses upon the promotion of the key qualities found in effective learners.  These qualities are identified, nurtured and encouraged by our diverse staff body.

Two thirds of our pupils learn a musical instrument and 50 % of those, two. Termly progression through ABRSM grade exams sat at our school led to 169 awards being made last year.  Older pupils achieved distinctions at Grade 7.  Our weekly composition club builds on class music lessons and the use of Sibelius software.

The School continues to put out a tremendous number of sports teams and we have competed at the highest level.  Lochinver football is highly respected because we are serious contenders and indeed ‘giant killers’ in the Independent Schools Football Association cup – a national competition – where we are in the finals in March where we hope to become the first Prep School to ever win the Cup.   We recently had an outstanding achievement by the U13 basketball team, winning the IAPS National Basketball Tournament.

We have a Rugby Tour to South African in April 2018 and a soccer tour to Portugal is planned for October 2018.  Some of our pupils are contracted to professional clubs and our athletes had a successful last year with 3 golds at the London & SE IAPS championships.
