Greater Manchester Police was established in 1974 and is now one of the largest police forces in the UK and is responsible for keeping its diverse population of almost 3 million safe, spread over more than 1,200 sq. km. Manchester in particular has been billed as the most diverse city in Europe with its population speaking at least 200 different languages, leading to the city being named as Britain’s “City of languages”. GMP is split into 10 districts - Bolton, Bury, City of Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan. There is also a specialist division based at Manchester International Airport.
